Backyard Bug Hotel

Build a cozy winter home for ladybugs and other beneficial insects using natural materials. You'll learn how to attract helpful bugs that protect your garden from pests.

Materials

• small flower pot (1)
• straw (2 handfuls)
• wide bamboo sections (1 bundle)
• twine or string (1 foot)

Safety

• Do not wrap string around neck or limbs.
• Adult supervision required for children under 8.

Steps

1. Find a small flower pot to serve as the outer shell of your bug hotel.
2. Fill the bottom of the pot with a layer of straw to create a soft base.
3. Gather your wide bamboo sections and bundle them together tightly.
4. Use the twine or string to tie the bamboo bundle securely so the pieces stay in place.
5. Place the tied bamboo bundle inside the pot on top of the straw.
6. Stuff more straw around the sides of the bamboo bundle to fill any gaps and provide insulation for the bugs.
7. Find a sheltered, sunny spot in your garden and position the hotel one to three feet above the ground.
