• terracotta pot (6-inch diameter, 1)
• dried straw (2 large handfuls)
• hollow bamboo sections (1/2 inch diameter, 10-15 pieces)
• garden twine (2 feet)

Steps

1. Gather your bamboo sections and bundle them together so they fit snugly inside the terracotta pot.
2. Wrap the garden twine around the bamboo bundle and tie it tightly with a knot to keep the tubes from shifting.
3. Place a layer of dried straw at the bottom of the terracotta pot to create a soft base.
4. Insert the tied bundle of bamboo sections into the center of the pot.
5. Stuff more dried straw around the sides of the bamboo bundle, filling all the gaps until the pot is full. This provides insulation for the bugs.
6. Find a sheltered, sunny spot in your garden.
7. Position the bug hotel one to three feet above the ground (you can place it on a sturdy garden table or a low shelf) to keep it safe from ground moisture.
