Calm Down Sensory Bottles
Create mesmerizing, shimmering bottles that help you relax and focus. You'll learn how different liquids and materials create 'hang time' as glitter slowly sinks to the bottom.
Tools
- paper towels
Materials
- clear plastic bottles with lids (12 oz, 1 per person)
- purified water (approx. 1/2 cup per bottle)
- clear liquid soap or glycerin (approx. 1/2 cup per bottle)
- glitter (fine and chunky, 2 tbsp per bottle)
- orbeez or small polymer clay charms (10-15 pieces per bottle)
- industrial strength glue, such as E6000 (1 tube)
Safety
- Adult supervision required for applying industrial strength glue.
- Ensure bottles are sealed tightly to prevent leaks.
- Small parts like glitter and charms can be choking hazards for very young children.
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
- Protect work surface. Materials may stain clothing.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Fill your plastic bottle about halfway with purified water. Note: Using less water creates more 'hang time' for the glitter, while more water makes it sink faster.
- Add your 'toppings' to the water. Start with chunky glitter or themed charms (like seashells or butterflies), then add fine glitter to create a shimmering effect.
- If using orbeez, add them now without pre-soaking them if you prefer them to be smaller.
- Slowly fill the rest of the bottle to the very top with clear liquid soap. This thickens the liquid and slows down the movement of the glitter.
- Apply a generous amount of industrial strength glue around the threading of the bottle neck and inside the threading of the lid.
- Screw the lid on tightly and let the bottle sit undisturbed for 12 to 24 hours to allow the glue to cure completely.
- Once cured, shake the bottle vigorously in all directions to ensure all glitter and charms are fully coated in soap and moving freely.
