DIY Craft Stick Harmonica
Build your own musical instrument using simple household items! You will learn how vibrations and compressed air create sound waves that travel to your ears.
Tools
- scissors
- ruler
Materials
- tongue depressors or large craft sticks (2)
- thick rubber band (1)
- thin rubber bands (2)
- cardstock paper (2 squares, 2-inches by 2-inches)
- clear tape (4 small pieces)
Safety
- Adult supervision recommended when using scissors to cut cardstock.
- Be careful with rubber bands to avoid snapping them against skin or eyes.
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
- Rubber bands can snap. Wear eye protection if launching projectiles.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Take one tongue depressor and wrap the thick rubber band around the center of the stick, securing it firmly.
- Take your first 2-inch square of cardstock and fold it in thirds to create a small, thick strip.
- Roll a piece of tape so that it is sticky on all sides and place the folded cardstock onto the tape.
- Take the second tongue depressor (the one without the rubber band) and press it onto the taped cardstock, leaving a small gap of space at the end of the stick.
- Repeat the folding and taping process with the second 2-inch square of cardstock and attach it to the opposite end of the second tongue depressor, again leaving a small gap at the end.
- Place the first tongue depressor (with the thick rubber band) on top of the second tongue depressor to create a 'stick sandwich'.
- Wrap one thin rubber band tightly around the end where the cardstock is located, winding it 6 to 7 times to ensure it is very secure.
- Repeat the tight wrapping process with the second thin rubber band on the opposite end of the harmonica.
- To play, place your mouth over the opening and breathe in and out, or talk into the instrument to create musical vibrations.
