Steps

  1. Wrap the toilet paper roll in scrapbook paper, fabric, or wrapping paper to decorate the outside of the kaleidoscope.
  2. Take the 4x6 inch piece of mylar cardstock and make two folds to create a triangle shape. Secure the edge with a piece of tape.
  3. Slide the mylar triangle into the cardboard tube. This creates the reflective interior.
  4. Trace the end of the cardboard tube onto the clear plastic twice to create two circles. Cut them out along the lines.
  5. Insert the first plastic circle into the end of the tube, ensuring it lays flat against the bottom of the mylar triangle.
  6. Cut a 1-inch wide strip from a second cardboard tube. Cut a slit down the middle of this strip, fold it over about a half inch, and secure it with tape to create a rotating ring.
  7. Place the rotating ring into the end of the kaleidoscope so it fits securely but can still spin.
  8. Place the second plastic circle on top of the end cap and secure it firmly with clear tape.
  9. Wrap washi tape around the edges of the end cap for a clean, finished look.
  10. Remove the end cap briefly to add a handful of colored beads inside, then attach the cap back to the base.
  11. Point the kaleidoscope toward a light source or a patterned surface and rotate the end cap to see the patterns change.
