DIY Pine Cone Bird Feeder
Create a tasty treat for your backyard birds using a pine cone, peanut butter, and seeds. You'll learn how to attract local wildlife and help support plant growth in your neighborhood.
Materials
- pine cone (1 medium)
- peanut butter or lard-based substitute (2 tbsp)
- birdseed (1 cup)
- yarn (12 inches)
- tape (2 small pieces)
Safety
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
- Do not wrap string around neck or limbs.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Fill a shallow pan or plate with 1 cup of birdseed so it is easy to roll the feeder in.
- Using a plastic knife, scoop up peanut butter and spread it thoroughly into the gaps and scales of the pine cone.
- Ensure the peanut butter is spread all around the cone, including the edges, to create a sticky surface for the seeds.
- Roll the peanut-butter-covered pine cone in the birdseed, pressing gently so the seeds stick to the peanut butter.
- Shake off any excess birdseed that didn't stick.
- Cut a length of yarn (approximately 12 inches) using scissors.
- Apply a small piece of tape to each end of the yarn to secure it to the top of the pine cone, or tie the yarn securely around the top scales of the cone to create a hanging loop.
- Find a sturdy branch or potted plant outside and hang your bird feeder in a spot where birds can easily find it.
