Build your own periscope to see around corners or over walls! You'll learn how light reflects off mirrors to let you spy on things without being seen.

Steps

  1. If using a cardboard box, ensure it is sealed shut. If using a tube, make sure it is sturdy and straight.
  2. Measure and mark a square hole at the top of the tube/box and another square hole at the bottom on the opposite side.
  3. Mark holes Top hole Bottom hole Ruler Measure and mark square holes at the top and opposite bottom
  4. Carefully cut out the two square holes using scissors. These are where your mirrors will go.
  5. Cut out Top hole Bottom hole Carefully cut out the two square holes using scissors
  6. Place the first mirror inside the top hole at a 45-degree angle, facing downwards.
  7. Angle 45° Cardboard Tube Mirror Slide the mirror into the top hole at a 45-degree angle
  8. Secure the first mirror firmly in place using glue or tape so it doesn't wiggle.
  9. Tape it! Mirror Cardboard Secure the first mirror firmly with tape or glue so it doesn't move
  10. Place the second mirror inside the bottom hole at a 45-degree angle, facing upwards toward the first mirror.
  11. Angle Up Bottom Hole Top Mirror Place the second mirror at a 45-degree angle facing upwards
  12. Secure the second mirror firmly in place using glue or tape.
  13. Tape mirror Tape/Glue Bottom Mirror Secure the second mirror firmly in place using glue or tape
  14. Look through the bottom hole; you should now see the reflection from the top mirror!
  15. Look inside! Top Mirror Bottom Mirror Look through the bottom hole to see the reflection from the top!
  16. Decorate the outside of your periscope with wrapping paper or paint to camouflage it for your spy missions.
  17. Wrap it! Periscope Paper Decorate the outside to camouflage your periscope!
