Learn the art of paper folding to create a beautiful, everlasting rose. This project teaches patience and precision while making a lovely flower for a gift or decoration.

• square origami paper (6-inch x 6-inch, 1 sheet)
• green pipe cleaner (12-inch, 1 piece)

Steps

1. Start with your square piece of paper. Fold it in half horizontally and vertically to create a cross crease in the center, then unfold it.
2. Fold the paper diagonally from corner to corner in both directions to create an 'X' crease, then unfold.
3. Fold all four corners into the center point of the paper (Blintz fold) to create a smaller square.
4. Fold the four new corners into the center again to make an even smaller square.
5. Fold the paper in half to create a rectangle, then unfold it to leave a center crease.
6. Fold the top and bottom edges toward the center crease, then fold those edges toward the center again to create a narrow strip of paper.
7. Carefully fold the strip in half and use your scissors to cut a small notch or 'V' shape into the side to help the petals open.
8. Gently roll the paper from the bottom upward, twisting slightly as you go to create a spiral shape.
9. Pinch the bottom of the roll tightly to form the base of the flower.
10. Carefully peel back the top layers of the paper with your fingers to create the look of opening rose petals.
11. Wrap the green pipe cleaner around the base of the rose and twist it tightly to create the stem.
