Colorful Matisse-Style Cut-Outs
Kids will explore the 'drawing with scissors' technique used by artist Henri Matisse. They will create a vibrant, abstract collage using bold shapes and bright colors.
Tools
- scissors
- glue stick
- pencil
- washable markers (set of 10 colors, 1 pack)
Materials
- heavy white cardstock or poster board (12x18 inch, 1 sheet)
- brightly colored construction paper (assorted colors, 5 sheets)
Safety
- Adult supervision required when using scissors.
- Ensure children use blunt-tipped safety scissors.
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
- Protect work surface. Materials may stain clothing.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Lay out the colorful construction paper on a flat surface.
- Instead of drawing a perfect sketch, use the scissors to 'draw' directly into the colored paper, cutting out organic, wavy, and abstract shapes like leaves, stars, or blobs.
- Create at least 10 to 15 different shapes of varying sizes and colors.
- Place the large white cardstock on the table to serve as the canvas.
- Arrange the cut-out shapes on the white background without gluing them yet. Move them around to create a balanced, colorful composition.
- Once you are happy with the arrangement, use the glue stick to apply adhesive to the back of each shape.
- Press each shape firmly onto the white cardstock.
- Use the washable markers to draw a few additional lines or small dots around the shapes to add extra detail and movement to the artwork.
