Magic Oobleck Slime

Create a mysterious substance that acts like both a solid and a liquid! You'll learn about non-Newtonian fluids and explore how pressure changes the way a material behaves.

Materials

• cornstarch (2 cups)
• water (1 cup)
• food coloring (2-3 drops, optional)

Safety

• Adult supervision is recommended.
• Do not eat the Oobleck.
• Do not pour Oobleck down the sink as it can clog pipes; dispose of it in the trash.
• Protect work surface. Materials may stain clothing.
• Adult supervision required for children under 8.

Steps

1. Pour 2 cups of cornstarch into the mixing bowl.
2. If using food coloring, add 2-3 drops to 1 cup of water and stir until the color is blended.
3. Slowly pour the water into the bowl with the cornstarch.
4. Stir the mixture with a spoon until it reaches a thick, gooey consistency.
5. Once it becomes too hard to stir with the spoon, use your hands to mix it until smooth.
6. Test your Oobleck: Punch the surface quickly to see it act like a solid, then dip your fingers in slowly to see it act like a liquid!
