Colorful Paper Chain Snake
Create a long, wiggly snake using colorful paper loops! This project helps kids practice their fine motor skills and learn about patterns while making a fun toy to play with.
Tools
- scissors
- ruler
- red marker (1 marker)
Materials
- colored construction paper (10 sheets, assorted colors)
- glue stick (1 stick)
- googly eyes (2 pieces)
- tape (1 roll)
Safety
- Adult supervision required when using scissors.
- Googly eyes are small and can be a choking hazard for very young children.
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
- Small parts pose a choking hazard. Supervise young children.
- Protect work surface. Materials may stain clothing.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Use the ruler to measure and mark strips of paper that are 2 inches wide and 6 inches long across all your construction paper sheets.
- Carefully cut out the strips using scissors.
- Take one strip of paper and curve it into a circle. Overlap the two ends by about one inch and secure them with a glue stick or a piece of tape. This is the first link of your snake.
- Take a second strip of paper and slide it through the center of the first loop. Glue or tape the ends together to create a second link.
- Repeat this process, sliding a new strip through the previous loop and securing it, until you have used all your paper strips to make a long chain.
- To make the snake's head, take one final strip of paper. Instead of a full circle, fold it into a slightly wider loop or a small ball shape and attach it to the front of the chain.
- Glue the two googly eyes onto the head of the snake.
- Use the red marker to draw a small, flicking tongue coming out of the front of the head.
- Gently pull the chain to make sure all links are secure and enjoy your wiggly paper snake!
