Baking Soda Volcano
Build your own volcano and watch it erupt with a colorful foam explosion! You will learn how a chemical reaction happens when you mix an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda).

Materials
- plastic cup (1)
- water (approx. 1 cup)
- dish soap (1 squirt)
- food coloring (3-5 drops)
- baking soda (2-3 tbsp)
- vinegar (1/2 cup)
- building materials for volcano structure (such as dirt, sand, or clay)
Safety
- Protect work surface. Materials may stain clothing.
- Adult supervision required for children under 8.
Steps
- Build a volcano structure around a plastic cup using dirt, sand, or clay. Ensure the cup is placed in the center and is stable so it does not tip over.
- Fill the plastic cup about 2/3 full with water.
- Add one squirt of dish soap to the water.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring (or any color you prefer) to the mixture.
- Add 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup.
- Use the spoon to stir the mixture thoroughly.
- Carefully pour the vinegar into the cup and watch the volcano erupt!
