Build your own volcano and watch it erupt with a colorful foam explosion! You will learn how a chemical reaction happens when you mix an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda).

Steps

  1. Build a volcano structure around a plastic cup using dirt, sand, or clay. Ensure the cup is placed in the center and is stable so it does not tip over.
  2. Fill the plastic cup about 2/3 full with water.
  3. Add one squirt of dish soap to the water.
  4. Add a few drops of red food coloring (or any color you prefer) to the mixture.
  5. Add 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup.
  6. Use the spoon to stir the mixture thoroughly.
  7. Carefully pour the vinegar into the cup and watch the volcano erupt!
