Build a high-speed rocket powered by air! You will learn how forces work by seeing how air rushing out of a balloon pushes a straw across a string.

Materials

• balloon (1)
• plastic drinking straw (1)
• string or twine (10-15 feet)
• clear adhesive tape (2-3 pieces)
• heavy objects for anchors (2, such as chairs or tables)

Safety

• Adult supervision is recommended when inflating balloons.
• Be careful not to let the balloon pop near your face.
• Ensure the string is tied securely to avoid it slipping and causing a trip hazard.
• Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
• Do not wrap string around neck or limbs.
• Adult supervision required for children under 8.

Steps

1. Tie one end of the string securely to a heavy object, like a chair or a door handle.
2. Thread the plastic straw onto the string so that the string passes all the way through the center of the straw.
3. Pull the string tight and tie the other end to a second heavy object across the room, making sure the string is a flat, straight line.
4. Blow up the balloon about halfway and pinch the end shut with your fingers to keep the air inside (do not tie it!).
5. While holding the balloon shut, use pieces of tape to attach the balloon to the straw. The balloon should be positioned so the opening is facing the starting point of the string.
6. Push the balloon and straw back to the start of the string.
7. Let go of the pinched end of the balloon and watch your rocket blast off across the room!
