Magic Moon Sand
Create a moldable, squishy sand that feels like a mix between kinetic sand and dough. This sensory project helps kids explore textures and practice scooping and pouring skills.
Tools
- mixing bowl
- pastry cutter or large spoon
- plastic container with a lid
- household utensils (spoons, cups, or plastic knives for play)
Materials
- all-purpose flour (2 cups)
- baby oil (1/2 cup)
Safety
- Adult supervision is recommended to help with measuring and mixing.
- Ensure children do not ingest the baby oil or flour mixture.
- Be mindful of surfaces; while easy to clean, flour can be messy on carpets.
Steps
- Pour 2 cups of all-purpose flour into a large mixing bowl.
- Add 1/2 cup of baby oil to the flour.
- Use your hands or a pastry cutter to mix the oil and flour together thoroughly.
- Continue mixing until the texture is consistent and the sand holds its shape when squeezed.
- If the sand is too dry, add a small amount of extra baby oil; if it is too oily, add a bit more flour.
- Transfer the finished moon sand into a plastic container with a lid for storage.
- Add household utensils like spoons or cups to the container for open-ended sensory play.
