The Great Paper Tower Challenge
Build the tallest tower possible using only paper and tape! You'll learn about engineering and structural strength by trying to support a heavy can of food at the very top.
Tools
- scissors
- ruler
- measuring tape
- unopened can of food (14-16 ounces)
Materials
- printer or notebook paper (8.5 x 11 inch, 30 sheets)
- clear office or masking tape (1 roll, 1 inch width)
Safety
- Adult supervision recommended when using scissors.
- Be careful not to let the heavy can fall on toes or pets during testing.
- Adult supervision required for sharp objects.
Steps
- Plan your design by sketching how you will make the paper strong. Remember that rolling paper into tight tubes or folding it into accordions makes it harder to bend than flat sheets.
- Create a sturdy base. Use several sheets of paper to create a wide foundation and tape it securely to your table or floor to prevent the tower from tipping.
- Build the main supports. Roll sheets of paper into tight cylinders or fold them into triangular prisms. Tape the edges so they hold their shape.
- Add structural reinforcement. Use 'trusses' by taping diagonal pieces of paper across your squares or rectangles to create triangles, which makes the structure much stronger.
- Build your tower in stages. Every few inches, test if the tower can support its own weight before adding more height.
- Construct a flat platform at the very top of your tower that is wide enough to hold the food can.
- Carefully place the 14-16 ounce can of food on top of your tower.
- Start a timer and see if the tower can support the can for 60 seconds without collapsing.
- If the tower falls, analyze where it bent or broke, then use your remaining paper to reinforce those weak spots and try again!
